The Butterfly Project Action Rally: Help Hope Rise Up

Hope isn’t wishful thinking—it’s taking action for a better future. In a world where strife, uncertainty and hate grab headlines and inspire fear in the hearts of people across the world, hope is a balm that heals. It’s powerful. It’s critical. Hope is a radical act.

Small actions, done by caring individuals, can change the world. But where does one start? How can you get involved to make a bigger impact? Join us for The Butterfly Project Action Rally on May 24th and find out how you can be a part of this global movement promoting a more compassionate, respectful and just society.

This event is about sharing stories, bridging barriers and finding ways to be useful in a rapidly changing world—helping to spread this movement of hope spread to every dark corner hate hides in.

Through The Butterfly Project, we will give you the tools to share your own stories of hope and help you rally for change in your community.

We believe that individual action can change people’s hearts and, with that, the future.

So, whether you’re interested in sharing on social media or pounding the pavement for a worthy cause, we’ll have stations set up to provide you with opportunities to influence impact in your own unique way. For example, you can take the #StandWithHope pledge and share your commitment in front of our butterfly mural or you can help write partners or sign-up to volunteer in the future. You can join our sticky note brainstorming session, to contribute your thoughts for how The Butterfly Project can influence change in the future.

Or, you can simply show up and talk with others in the room. Conversation is the crux of bridging our communities for a better tomorrow, and we hope to start one on May 24th.

Groundbreaking Ceremony to Celebrate Nora’s Home Transplant Hospitality Facility Expansion @ Nora's Home
Jun 9 @ 2:00 pm
Groundbreaking Ceremony to Celebrate Nora’s Home Transplant Hospitality Facility Expansion @ Nora's Home

Nora’s Home, Houston’s haven for organ failure and transplant patients receiving care in the Texas Medical Center, is proud to announce an expansion that will double the existing lodging capacity. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at Nora’s Home located at 8300 El Rio St., Houston, TX on Friday, June 9 at 2 p.m. to celebrate the expansion, which will allow the home to provide an additional 10,800 lodging nights per year to organ transplant patients and their families.
The expansion will include 16 additional guest rooms, a communal kitchen with an area for cooking classes, laundry room, expanded storage space and administrative offices. Four of the family guest rooms will be built with strict immune suppressed protocol for post-lung transplant patients. A boardroom and education room will open up to each other to allow for expanded space for a Transplant Life Center. Although the additional family rooms in the expansion will not meet the housing needs of all the transplant patients in the Texas Medical Center, the expansion will substantially increase the number of families Nora’s Home can help.
“In the spirit of Nora Gaber’s extraordinary compassion, Nora’s Home has already touched the lives of thousands of transplant patients and their families across our state and nation. Nora’s Home is more than an impersonal temporary housing option, it is truly a home where patients and their families can find comfort, community, and healing from the physical, emotional and financial trials of organ transplantation,” states Kayla Lehmann, Executive Director of Nora’s Home. “The feedback we receive from our patients has reinforced our mission of taking a holistic approach to health and recovery by providing transplant patients and their families with more than just a place to lay their head.”
The groundbreaking ceremony will also include a raffle car presentation to the winner of Nora’s Home “Giving Back to the Future” gala raffle. Shane Duckworth of the Oklahoma Storm Chasers will receive the keys to a stainless steel 1981 DeLorean. Close to 1,000 supporters entered the raffle to win the sought after collectible automobile in support of the Nora’s Home facility and its programs.
The expansion has been designed by Landmark Architects and will be constructed by Satterfield & Pontikes Construction (S&P), a long-time partner of Nora’s Home and the builder of the existing facility.
Nora’s Home is dedicated to providing all patients and families in the Texas Medical Center with the necessary support and resources they require for a successful transplant. The home’s expansion will help fill the housing void and is currently the only hospitality-housing program in the Gulf Coast region to address the specific needs of transplant patients.
For additional information on Nora’s Home groundbreaking or naming opportunities, please contact Natalie Lencioni Raymer, Assistant Director of Nora’s Home, at 832- 831-3721 or email natalie.lencioni@norashome.org.

Celebration of Hope @ Holocaust Museum Houston
Jul 22 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Celebration of Hope @ Holocaust Museum Houston | Houston | Texas | United States

Join HMH for a “Celebration of Hope” Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The family-friendly affair is part of the free admission weekend before the museum closes July 24 and relocates during its recently announced $33.8 million expansion. Activities include live music, food trucks, poetry readings by Writers Resist: Houston, kids’ butterfly art activities and face painting, interactive murals centered around hope, and live demonstrations by art students from Harmony Schools and Via Colori chalk artists Team RussKell. Special booths by HMH partners Barnes & Noble, Houston Japanese American Citizens League, Equality Texas, American Civil Liberties Union, Center for the Healing of Racism, and Asia Society will provide information and fun activities for all ages. Guided docent tours are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m.,1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., along with special appearances and conversations with Houston-area Holocaust survivors at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Admission to the museum is waived both Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23, allowing visitors one last viewing of HMH’s “Bearing Witness” permanent exhibition, along with the WWII German railcar, Danish rescue boat, memorial room and galleries. Featured exhibitions include a poetry display by Houston-area students on understanding the Holocaust, and “Vedem: The Underground Magazine of the Terezin Ghetto” on view in the Mincberg Gallery. “Vedem,” a multi-media art exhibition created by Rina Taraseiskey, Michael Murphy and Danny King, deconstructs and reinterprets the literary work of a secret society of Jewish boys who created the longest running magazine in any Nazi camp.

Last month, HMH announced a dramatic expansion to more than double its size to a total of 57,000 square feet and make HMH the fourth-largest Holocaust museum in the country. Construction will require HMH to temporarily relocate most of its permanent exhibit, classrooms and administrative offices to 9220 Kirby Drive, Suite 100. The Museum will close on Monday, July 24 to begin the move and open to visitors at its temporary location on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

UNITE with us to end Human Trafficking!

Please join us for a fun evening of cocktails and appetizers, both of which are included in the ticket price. The event will feature a silent auction, wine & gift card pull.

All money raised will go towards UAHT’s fight to end human trafficking in Houston. 2017 has been an exciting year for our organization, as we have experienced a tremendous amount of growth increasing our reach within the Houston region. This spring we partnered with The City of Houston and the Houston Rescue and Restore coalition to combat human trafficking during Super Bowl LVI. Our Outreach Staff have been busy working with Houston’s most vulnerable populations; educating them on human trafficking. The survivor led victim outreach and youth programming depend on donations from community supporters.

The Department of Justice estimates as many as one-fifth of all human trafficking victims pass through Texas. Advocacy groups and the FBI have long ranked Houston as one of the nation’s hotspots for human trafficking and we need your help to stop this.
Please also share this event with your social media networks. Connect with us via our Twitter handle “@UAgainstHT” and our new Instagram “@UAgainstHT”
